Student Experience

Joanne Macholc

I am currently a second year student studying for ordination and previously undertook the Called to Serve Course. LCTP is providing me with a high standard of theological training, which is shaping me for ministry and helping me to grow in faith. I really appreciate being with a diverse bunch of students who bring great experience from their lives and varying church backgrounds. Studying part-time is a challenge, and it’s certainly not a soft option, but the course is very well organised and staff are accessible and supportive.

As someone in their final year of studying with LCTP before ordination, I must say it has been nothing but a pleasure to be part of this special community. Studying alongside fellows training for ordained ministry has been tremendously rewarding and educational. The study is robust and thought-provoking, and the support provided by tutors and peers has always made me feel that I can get through the academic requirements. The social side and the friendships I have made have been terrific, and the summer schools I have experienced alongside my friends have created wonderful memories that will stay with me forever. For someone not in a position to go into full-time education, LCTP provides the perfect platform for those training for ministry within the church to learn and be formed for future years.

The years I have spent studying with LCTP (both as an independent student and then as an ordinand) have been some of the most interesting and formative years of my life to date. The experience has been challenging but also rewarding. It has been a privilege to study proper academic theology but always with a practical slant. The tutors are all aware of the realities of ministry and work hard to ensure that the teaching is applicable to real life. In all the modules I have studied there has been a good sense of community with open and supportive relationships between the tutors and the group members, to the benefit and enjoyment of all.

I have been blessed, challenged and turned inside out. Do not expect to come out of this course unchanged. It will make you think of areas of theology, mission, faith and vocation you have never thought about and also challenge you in areas you felt you knew everything about.

I have studied with LCTP for four years as an independent student and loved it so much I have come back for a further two years to complete a BA Hons in Practical Theology. This is a unique opportunity for those who are unable to attend university full-time to fulfil their potential with the support and guidance of the tutors.

It has been a fantastic learning experience, but it is fair to say that the course is demanding and expectations of students are high. My time spent studying with LCTP has been some of the most enjoyable for a long time. The friendships and relationships formed through this period will, I am sure, help to sustain me in the years to come. All in all an incredible experience with an incredible organisation.
